Self-esteem, what is it?

This summer, we are preparing a small series of articles on the theme of self-esteem and our psychologist Julie Le Pite, a specialist on the issue, is talking to you about it!
Although this concept is very common in everyday life, what does it mean more concretely?
Currently, no consensus has emerged regarding the definition of self-esteem and in its current acceptance, self-esteem designates the more or less favorable evaluation that an individual makes of himself, the consideration and respect he has for himself, the value he associates with himself.
The unidimensional perspective of self-esteem, long favored in psychological research, has today given way to a multidimensional perspective, which recognizes the existence of specific domains of self-evaluation and global self-esteem, thus finding itself more in tune with the complexity of the Self.
Research now agrees to consider self-esteem as the result of a psychological construction and the product of a cognitive and social activity. We can then consider self-esteem from a developmental perspective, which changes throughout life.
Thus, it is from repeated experiences in the physical and social environment that self-esteem will gradually be built and the first system which impacts the self-esteem of individuals is represented by the family.
The first interactions constitute the basis for the development of self-esteem, the child being very sensitive to the views of his parents.
In a future article we will talk to you about the specificities of self-esteem in adolescence.
