Couples therapy: when to take the plunge?

In any relationship, it's normal to experience conflict - it's even necessary. When these difficulties become too great, couple therapy can be an option to heal and strengthen the relationship or, on the contrary, consider separation.

When should you consider couple therapy?

Here are a few pointers:
Difficult communication: communication between you and your partner has become strained, unconstructive or non-existent.

Persistent conflicts: If you find yourself in a cycle of recurring conflicts and seem unable to resolve them on your own, outside intervention can provide tools and insights to break this pattern.

Loss of connection: If you're feeling distant, emotionally disconnected or struggling to regain intimacy in your relationship.

What if my partner refuses?

If your partner is reluctant to see a therapist, he may not be ready yet. There's no point in forcing him - it would be counterproductive.

We invite you first to express your concerns and your desire to work on the relationship to your partner. Try to understand his or her reasons for being reluctant to seek therapy, and discuss them together in an open and empathetic way.

Take care of yourself: Even if your partner refuses therapy, you can always consider seeing an individual therapist for support and advice on how to cope.

Give it time: Respect the fact that your partner may need time to consider therapy. Continue to communicate openly about your needs and concerns, but avoid forcing his or her hands.

And remember, there's no shame in asking for help when you need it.
