Linocut is an artistic relief engraving technique distinguished by its simplicity and expressiveness. In this method, the artist uses a sheet of linoleum - a flexible but durable material - to create an image by carving patterns into the surface. Using gouges and carving tools, he removes parts of the plate that won't receive the ink, leaving the areas that will be printed in relief.
Once the motif has been engraved, the plate is coated with ink using a roller. It is then pressed against paper to transfer the image. This technique produces sharp lines and rich textures, with a unique appearance of sharp contrasts and textured detail. Linocut is prized for its handcrafted, artisanal feel, and offers great freedom in the creation of motifs, from simple, stylized shapes to complex compositions. The result is often vibrant and powerful, with a raw, natural aesthetic that makes each print unique.
